3-Day Excursion to Pelion – Volos – Kalabaka – Meteora – Trikala

3ημερη εκδροη σε Πήλιο-Βόλο

Sunday 26/10

Boarding the ship and departure for Piraeus. Overnight on board.

Monday 27/10

Disembarkation from the ship and departure with intermediate stops for Pelion. We ascend the beautiful mountain of the Centaurs to visit Portaria, an authentic Pelion village with breathtaking views, cobbled alleys, traditional stone houses, grand mansions, stone fountains, churches, monuments, and picturesque squares. Here we can shop for the famous spoon sweets for which the area is renowned, as well as aromatic herbs, honey, jams, and tsipouro, and enjoy our coffee.

Our next stop is Makrinitsa, perched on the steep slope of the mountain. Since 1980 it has been designated as a preserved traditional settlement. When Eleftherios Venizelos visited, he named it the “Balcony of the Aegean” because of its extraordinary view of the Pagasitikos Gulf.

We will admire the architectural character of the village, its well-preserved mansions, its picturesque and skillfully crafted cobbled paths, around 60 traditional fountains, and the lush green landscape with plane trees, beeches, chestnut, and walnut trees. Free time for an optional meal in Pelion’s traditional tavernas. Don’t miss tasting the famous Pelion dish “spetsofai.” Next stop: Chania, the highest point of Pelion at an altitude of 1,200 meters, “surrounded” by dense beech and chestnut forests, a true oasis of coolness in the summer months. Arrival in Volos, transfer, and check-in at our hotel. Overnight stay.

Tuesday 28/10

Breakfast at the hotel. After a rich buffet breakfast, transfer to Kalabaka to visit the Mushroom Museum. Our next stop is Meteora. Upon arrival, the sight of the towering dark rocks inspires awe. Since the 11th century, the monasteries of Meteora have been perched on their peaks and caves. UNESCO has declared Meteora a “Preserved and Protected Monument of Humanity.” It is both a unique geological phenomenon of outstanding beauty and an important monument of Orthodoxy. First, we will tour the giant rocks, creating a one-of-a-kind spectacle. Then, we will visit the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior (Great Meteoron), the first and largest monastery of Meteora, founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite in the mid-14th century. After our tour of these awe-inspiring hermit rocks, we will head to Trikala for lunch and coffee at the traditional tavernas and cafés of the area. Return to Volos and overnight stay.

Wednesday 29/10

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Piraeus. Our first stop will be a visit to the Monastery of Panagia Xenia, a Byzantine monastery founded at the end of the 10th century. Next, we will stop at Kamena Vourla. Arrival at the port of Piraeus and boarding the ship for our return to Chios.
