Visit Nea Moni Monastery, Anavatos, and Avgonyma on a half day guided tour. Explore the most important medieval monument in Chios, a historic village, and a picturesque medieval village.

Start your day with a visit to Nea Moni, the most important medieval monument in Chios. This monastery complex was built in the 11th century by the Emperor Konstantinos Monomachos and his spouse, Zoe. The katholikon (the main church of the complex) is one of the few preserved samples of the “octagonal insular” type, with an excellent Byzantine mosaic decoration, reflecting the fine art of Constantinople during the Macedonian Dynasty.

Due to its importance for the history of art and architecture, the monastery is protected by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Monument. Next, visit the medieval settlement of Anavatos, a historic site of Chios Island, connected to the 1822 massacre. Known as the “Mistras of the Aegean Sea,” it is built on a steep rock, and has only one access from the north side.

The village is well preserved, with two-story houses and stone walls. At the acropolis, where restoration works are in process, admire the impressive three-story building, which housed the oil press, the school, and the church of the Archangel and Virgin Mary. The view from the top will reward you.

Although Anavatos is essentially a ghost village, some people have restored the family houses, especially in the lower zone of the village. In the summer and on weekends, the village kafeneio is open, serving homemade pastries and local dishes.

Only 6 km from Anavatos, lies the picturesque medieval village of Avgonyma. It is known for the stone cubic-shaped houses, the narrow alleys, and the stone-paved square. The view from the village is magical, as from the west side one can see the Aegean Sea, and from the east the forest. Enjoy lunch at Avgonyma village or Lithi.
